Tourist boat capsizes off coast of Tulum forcing passengers into the sea

Tulum, Q.R. — Seven people from a capsized boat managed to make it to shore Monday evening without major incident. The boat they were in capsized north of the town of Tulum off Punta Solimán after being hit by a wave.

After being forced into the sea, the six passengers and their captain began swimming for shore. Some were picked up by a passing vessel along the way while others managed on their own. All seven were met by Tulum Civil Protection and treated on shore.

Their captain, 32 year old Miguel “N”, received a minor foot injury that was attended to by Civil Protection paramedics before being transferred to hospital. The accident happened off the coast about half way between the town of Tulum and the town of Akumal.

According to initial reports, the boat was providing tourist services out of a nearby hotel when it set sail Monday. While touring at sea, winds picked up and a strong wave hit the boat, capsizing it.

Only the boat’s captain was transferred to hospital for a foot injury

All seven on board were adult males ranging in ages from 20 to 45. Authorities have opened an investigation into what happened.
