Three vehicles involved in highway crash outside Tulum

Tulum, Q.R. — Several people involved in a three vehicle accident were taken to hospital Saturday. Emergency services from the municipality of Tulum attended to the accident approximately 12 kilometers outside the seaside town.

Elements of the Tulum Traffic and Public Safety Department cordoned off the area when they arrived to a blocked highway. Early information says the driver of a red car was in the oncoming lane and collided with a passenger van.

An oncoming freight truck was also involved by default being unable to avoid the damaged van. All three vehicles were left blocking the highway.

The head on crash left the occupants of the car and van injured. Police did not speculate as to why the car was in the opposite lane when it collided with the van. The car and van were destroyed. The freight truck was left with minor front end damage.

Red Cross paramedics and other emergency services treated the injured at the scene before making the hospital transfers. Tow trucks were called in to remove the damaged vehicles. Traffic was backed up while personnel cleared the highway.
