Semi driver miscalculation collapses Nicolás Bravo pedestrian bridge

Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — A pedestrian bridge in the town of Nicolás Bravo was destroyed Tuesday night by a passing semi. The driver of the semi was transporting a backhoe on its flatbed when his load made contact with the overhead bridge.

The miscalculation happened around 7:00 p.m. at the entrance to the town. The entire concrete bridge collapsed. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene to find the bridge on top of the backhoe.

The mess of broken bridge debris combined with the oversized unit left a main road of the town completely blocked. Personnel from National Guard and the Army were sent to close the area and reroute traffic while the situation was dealt with.

The driver of the semi was moving the backhoe to an area for use on section 7 of the Maya Train at the time of the mishap. Debris clearing took place during the night. Authorities have not reported injuries, only material damage to a passing dump truck that was partially hit by the falling debris.  

Late Tuesday night, State Civil Protection (Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil de Quintana Roo) reported on the accident. “The incident is attended to on the vehicular bridge in Nicolas Bravo without injuries.

“The State Coordination of Civil Protection attends to the report of an incident registered on federal highway 307 at the height of the Nicolás Bravo in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco where damage to the pedestrian bridge was registered.

“The area remains cordoned off and no injuries were reported, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation is already working on the structural damage.”
