Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — The driver of a semi was killed Wednesday when he overturned his unit. The accident happened shortly before 2:00 a.m. outside the community of González Ortega west of the city of Chetumal.
Motorists using the highway notified authorities of the single vehicle accident. Due to the darkness, witnesses were unable to determine if there were any occupants inside the cab, but they reported hearing music from the stereo.
Rural Police were the first to arrive and found the driver trapped inside the cab. National Guard Highways arrived moments later to cordon off the area while Red Cross first responders confirmed the death of the driver.
The semi driver has been identified as Juan Vicente “C” from Tabasco. Highway traffic was affected for nearly five hours while the semi was turned upright and the body removed from the cab. Authorities did not release information as to how the driver overturned the unit.
