Tulum, Q.R. — For nearly two weeks, sea turtles have begun arriving along Tulum beaches. While the official season does not start until May, authorities have already located several nests.
Itzel Trujano, Coordinación del Programa de Conservación de Tortugas Marinas Riviera Maya, reported that biologist Leonel Gómez Nieto, a member of the surveillance camps, found the first nest.
“The head of the sea turtle conservation program in Riviera Maya and Tulum, Leonel Gómez Nieto, when carrying out an inspection on the Xcacel-Xcacelito beach, found the first nest of the season.
“It was from a loggerhead turtle and with this, the start of the 2022 season began,” she explained.
She said since his April 6 finding, four more sea turtle nests have been located. All five of the loggerhead nests were found on the beaches of Xcacel-Xcacelito.
