Riviera Maya hotel loses palapa lobby entrance to fire

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A fire that began in the laundry area of a Riviera Maya hotel quickly spread to the outside lobby. On Tuesday morning, firemen responded to a palapa fire at the Grand Palladium hotel located between Puerto Aventuras and Tulum.

Firefighters from Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen) and Tulum were sent to the scene just before noon after the report was made to Emergency 911. Firemen arrived and did their best to control flames which took several hours to get under control as the region continues to deal with high wind gusts. The fire was finally extinguished, but not before the entire exterior palapa of the hotel’s entrance lobby burned.

There were no injuries reported in the incident, only material damage. Firemen interviewing staff afterward learned that hotel guests and workers were evacuated while some hotel staff tried to fight the fire until help arrived, but to no avail.

The hotels’ palapa structures were reduced to ash.

Last month, an entire commercial block of Isla Mujeres was effected by a restaurant kitchen fire that quickly spread. Once out, firemen reported 10 businesses affected by the fire that spread with the help of strong wind gusts.
