Resident critical after massive LP gas explosion during Tulum refill

Tulum, Q.R. — An LP gas explosion in a residential complex of Tulum sent one to hospital in critical condition. Emergency services rushed to the Mayapax neighborhood Monday after reports of the explosion.

The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. Monday when a company gas truck was refilling a stationary tank in between buildings. The company truck was at an address on 8th Street when, during the refill, the gas exploded.

According to initial reports, a gas leak allegedly caused a buildup that eventually detonated. The explosion was enough to engulf the interior of the apartment and seriously injure one of the residents.

Civil Protection personnel and the Tulum Fire Department rushed to the scene where firemen put out the apartment fire. After several minutes, the fire was brought under control, however, the area remained cordoned off by agents from the Ministry of Public Security and Citizen Protection.

Paramedics provided first aid to the victim who was taken to Tulum Hospital in critical condition due to the severity of his injuries. Authorities have started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Authorities have not said if the company truck or employee may have been responsible or if there was a defect in the stationary tank being refilled.
