Repairs to highway damaged during 2024 hurricane expected to be finished in coming weeks

Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — A highway that is undergoing major rehabilitation is expected to be finished in coming weeks. Governor Mara Lezama says the Nuevo Canaán-Miguel Alemán highway in Othón P. Blanco is being repaired after 2024 damage during Hurricane Nadine.

The state is investing 4.5 million to repair and improve the busy road in the western region of Quintana Roo. Governor Lezama said the road in Othón P. Blanco is also undergoing reconstruction to withstand future weather conditions.

“With considerable progress we will complete this project in a few weeks thanks to an investment of more than 4.5 million pesos of money that doesn’t belong to the government. It’s resources that belong to the people and are for the benefit of the people,” she stated.

“This stretch of road was severely damaged during Hurricane Nadine. Water flowing in both directions passed through a culvert, but still caused the road to collapse. At that time, I pledged not only to repair it but also to improve it. We are monitoring it to confirm that the work is done correctly the first time,” she said.

José Rafael Lara Díaz, the Secretary of Public Works says to ensure it remains in top condition, 369.65 cubic meters of causeway and 360 cubic meters of sascab are being laid along with asphalt emulsion.

He says the project also includes the impregnation irrigation on 840 square meters, 780 square meters of 5-centimeter-thick asphalt concrete pavement, the installation of 10 precast concrete boxes for water drainage and the placement of 49.14 cubic meters of white material at subgrade level.
