Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — Over 4,600 native plants and 12,000 trees are being planted in a forest heart in southern Quintana Roo. Governor Mara Lezama said the reforestation project will cover four hectares in the Caobas ejido of Othón P. Blanco.
“Four hectares will be reforested with more than 4,600 plants of endemic species,” she reported Monday from the ejido Caobas. Governor Lezama participated in the launch of the National Reforestation and Restoration Program, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
Lezama reported that four hectares will be reforested with more than 4,600 plants of endemic species of the region, including ramón, chacteviga, ciricote and mahogany.
She also said that more than 12,000 trees will be planted throughout Quintana Roo in partnership with SADER, SEMARNAT, CONAGUA, CONANP, CONAFOR, and Sembrando Vida.
“President, thank you for promoting a transformation that places nature at the heart of the well-being agenda. Quintana Roo joins this vision with hard work, with land, and with a future. Today we plant trees, but in reality, we are planting the future of Mexico,” said Lezama.
Governor Lezama led the official launch ceremony in Quintana Roo for the National Reforestation and Restoration Program in which she swore in environmental defenders.
Accompanied by the head of CONADE, Rommel Pacheco, representing President Claudia Sheinbaum, Governor Mara Lezama pointed out that for the communities the land represents not only a productive space, but also memory, sustenance, identity and collective heritage, so the reforestation day also represents a recognition of the historical link between the communities and the jungle.
Before the army of people who participated in the forestry day, with shovels, picks and plants in hand, the Governor stressed that environmental protection also has an economic and social dimension, particularly in an entity whose tourism activity depends directly on its natural resources, its seas and its beaches.
Rommel Pacheco explained that this comprehensive initiative seeks the restoration of 32,184 hectares throughout the country by planting 6,686,390 trees.
He added that it will be developed simultaneously throughout the country, in all 32 federal entities, combining the efforts of the three levels of government, community members, ejido members, volunteers, thousands of committed Mexicans, the armed forces, all agencies, Agriculture, CONAFOR, Welfare, INJUVE.
