Police set up highway check point between Tulum and Playa del Carmen

Tulum, Q.R. — An inspection operation was in place Thursday on the highway border between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Elements of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum (Ssypc) set up the inter-institutional filter on the municipal limits.

Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo is seen here, right, talking with police during the Thursday highway inspection.

The operation included agents from National Guard, Sedena and the State Police. During the Thursday afternoon highway inspection, police stopped more than 100 vehicles.

Ssypc Secretary, José Roberto Rodríguez, said the filter was installed from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. between the limits of both municipalities. During those two hours, 80 vehicles were stopped along with 32 motorcycles. He says a total of 163 people were inspected, resulting in the arrest of a man for pot possession.

Three canine teams were added to the highway afternoon inspection tasks along with two specialized drones. According to Roberto Rodriguez, the inspection point was set up to deter crime and avoid drug trafficking.
