Playa del Carmen shooting leaves one dead, one injured

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: Armed men shot at two others, killing one and injuring the second just off 12th Street in central Playa del Carmen.

The shooting happened just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning on the corner of 10th Avenue and 12th Street, across the street from a string of popular nightclubs. Reports say two subjects approached the two men who were on the sidewalk, and began shooting, killing one.

The second man was shot in his left side and taken to hospital. The deceased man has unofficially been identified as J.A.H.O., between the ages of 35 and 40, a resident of La Guadalupana in the city’s northwest.

The area was cordoned off as police and medical units arrived. There were no arrests, however, Ministerial Police, in coordination with state police, searched for the two shooters who were reported to have fled toward the city’s center.

UPDATE: La Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) reports that since their investigation, details have emerged that the Sunday morning shooting that left one dead and one injured was the result of an altercation.

In their statement, the FGE said that according to first inquiries, two men left a restaurant where they drank alcoholic beverages. A few meters ahead, as they were nearing the intersection of 10th and 12th, they met another subject with whom an argument was generated that led to a quarrel. One of them took out a gun and fired at the other two, resulting in one death and one injury.

The injured man is said to be in stable condition. There is no word yet on arrests or possible suspects.
