PDC bike path partially closed while city changes five kilometers of overhead lines for underground

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An underground electrical project along a Playa del Carmen bike path is expected to take six months. PDC Councilman Uri Carmona says the new wire is being installed under the Xcaret-Playa del Carmen bike path.

PDC officials toured the start of the project Thursday May 21, 2026.

Authorities from the Playa del Carmen government toured the bike path Thursday to verify safety at the start of the project. They also verified the current condition in order to ensure that it is returned to the same state once the project is done.

Uri Carmona from PDC Urban Development, says the underground installation of high-voltage power lines will allow the removal of overhead wiring. This particular change will see five kilometers of overhead lines placed underground.

Changing out the overhead power lines for underground lines also provides greater safety during hurricane season, he noted.

A private company has been hired to make the change with the permission of the CFE. They will work in 400-meter sections at a time until all five kilometers has been placed beneath the bike path.

The switch from overhead to underground wires is set for October completion May 21, 2026.

According to Carmona, the new underground high-voltage wires are expected to be completely installed for October of this year. During the installation, the bike path will be partially closed.
