Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Marina personnel undertook manual clearing of sargassum from central Playa del Carmen. Several loose patches arrived over the weekend and made landfall north of Constituyentes Avenue.

A group of Marina personnel began clearing the seaweed Saturday morning that had washed up overnight. Beaches were ready for swimmers by mid-day and remained clear into Sunday.
Members of the Mexican Navy, along with personnel from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) of Playa del Carmen, cleared the way. Nets were used to capture the floating seaweed within walking distance of the shore.
Once the sargassum had been gathered, heavy machinery was brought in to finalize its removal.
Patches of sargassum are becoming more and more frequent along the coast.
Akumal Bay was affected last week by what local boatmen referred to as the largest amount they had seen arrive at one time. It too, was cleared by locals and Marina personnel over two-days.
