Parking meters, bicycle options coming for Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — It will be about a month-and-a-half before the installation of parking meters begins for the city of Playa del Carmen.

That is, according to Diego Gracidas Martínez, representative of the company installing the meters, Promotora de Reordenamiento Urbano. He says that it will be about six weeks before the 5,030 parking meters and 500 bicycles will be installed in 44 stations around the city.

Gracidas Martínez explained that first, the company will install the 44 bicycle stations. Approximately two weeks after that, they will begin with the installation of the parking meters. He says the parking meters are not the old traditional coin crank meters, but are digital and take several forms of payment.

The disabled with the disability plate, as well a motorcyclists, will be exempt from payment.

Once everything is installed, there will be a two-month grace period for people to adjust and learn how to use the bicycle option, which he says, will be explained at a later date, but did add that they can be used via a membership or day pass, an option that will be marketed through private companies.

The installation of parking meters is part of the previous administration’s Sistema Integral de Movilidad under Cristina Torres Gómez to make the use of cars in the city’s center less desirable and encourage more sustainable alternatives of transportation.
