Operation to locate vehicles with expired plates set for April

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Roadway check stops will be set up in coming weeks to locate vehicles with expired plates. The Quintana Roo Citizen Security Secretariat says as of April 1, they will begin an operation to locate vehicles traveling state roads with old plates.

During their check stops, vehicles will also be run through the national system for stolen reports and / or criminal activity.

Julio César Gómez Torres, the Secretary of Citizen Security, says drivers found circulating with expired or manipulated plates will be fined upwards of 2,000 pesos.

He says the fine is based on the state Traffic Regulations which establish that license plates must be properly displayed on the front and rear of vehicles, except for motorcycles and trailers, which only require a rear license plate.

Using covers that obscure the visibility of license plates is prohibited and could result in a 2,200 peso fine.

Drivers circulating with old plates will be fined.

He says the operation will verify that all vehicles in circulation have valid license plates with the aim of reinforcing road safety and facilitating the identification of vehicles reported stolen or related to criminal acts.
