On Wednesday morning, municipal officials went to see the hole for themselves in response to the emergency 9-1-1 report made the night before. The large hole was located between homes on Mercurio Street.

Part of the inspecting group was the Tulum Civil Protection General Director Manuel Castilla James who reported after an inspection, the situation did not warrant an evacuation of local residents.

Engineer Jesús Hernández, who is President of the College of Engineers and Architects of Tulum, said the hole was found to be dry so it has not been classified as a cenote. He said the sinkhole was measured to be around four meters wide and two meters deep.

He said heavy machinery has been ordered to fill the hole. The filling procedure will consist using stones and soft material, ensuring the stability of the ground and avoiding future subsidence.
