Akumal, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen ambulances were sent to the highway again after the report of another combi accident. On Sunday, nine people were transferred to Playa del Carmen hospitals after a highway accident outside Akumal.
The public transport van was carrying passengers along the Playa del Carmen – Tulum route Sunday afternoon when the van veered off the road and rolled. Emergency responders found the passenger van laying on its driver’s side in a highway ravine.
Nine people from inside managed to crawl out broken windows. Some of the less injured climbed onto the highway where they called for help. According to preliminary information, the accident happened late Sunday afternoon when the driver attempted to avoid something on the highway.
In doing so, the top-heavy unit left the highway and overturned. The van came to a sudden stop in thick jungle vegetation. Of the nine injured, six were reported to be serious.
Elements of the Highway Division arrived to direct traffic while ambulance transferred the injured. The public transport van was towed a federal corralón.
On Saturday morning, a highway accident involving a combi south of Playa del Carmen claimed six lives at the scene and two more in hospital. That weekend accident happened approximately 18 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen and involved four vehicles.
