Death toll rises to eight after two more die from Riviera Maya highway crash

Playa Del Carmen, Q.R. — Two more people have reportedly died from a Saturday morning Riviera Maya highway accident. On Sunday, a girl under the age of 10 died while being treated in Playa del Carmen hospital. Shortly afterward, her mother reportedly passed away, also in hospital.

The death toll from the Saturday morning accident has risen to eight. Six people were found dead at the scene of the four vehicle crash that happened south of the city of Playa del Carmen.

The Riviera Maya highway accident happened Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m. between a water truck, private car, passenger bus and public transport van (combi). Medical units attended to 13 injured, eight of whom were classified as serious at the time.

The driver of the water truck who, according to highway accident witnesses was responsible for the deadly crash, fled the scene. Local authorities have not announced his arrest.
