Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Six people have been killed and more than a dozen injured in a four-vehicle Riviera Maya highway crash. The accident happened early Saturday morning near Punta Venado approximately 18 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen.
Emergency vehicles were on scene for hours attending to the injured and removing smashed vehicles. According to preliminary information, the accident happened around 6:30 a.m. between a water truck, private car, passenger bus and public transport van (combi).
Early information provided by motorist witnesses say the driver of the water truck invaded another lane in an attempt to make a sudden change in direction. In doing so, the large truck collided with a bus that hit the combi that hit a private car. He then fled the scene.
Six people were killed, however, due to the seriousness of some of the injured, that figure could rise.
According to the medical report provided by the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), medical units and two fire units were at the scene who treated a total of 13 injured people, all of them passengers of the public transport urvan (combi).
According to the report, among the injured, eight have been classified as serious while four were classified as being minor. Six people were pronounced dead.
National Guard Highways directed traffic as emergency services attended to the injured, most of whom were found sitting on the highway’s central median where the combi finally came to a rest.
The involved vehicles were all heading toward Puerto Aventuras when the accident happened.
In a brief report Saturday, the SSC said they were on scene in support of the Solidaridad – Puerto Aventuras highway accident.
“Security and rescue agencies attended to a road accident on the Solidaridad – Puerto Aventuras federal highway near Punta Venado. Several vehicles were involved in the incident and the affected citizens were attended to.”
