Tulum, Q. R. — Damage to nine cabanas belonging to a Tulum hotel is the preliminary balance after an early morning fire. The fire was attended to by Tulum firemen at a hotel that was not in operation.
According to a briefing by the Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil QRoo, “in coordination with elements of the Tulum Fire Department, at 10:48 in the morning of Sunday, January 08, they attended to the report of a fire at the Hotel Alma Tulum.”
Flames quickly spread to other nearby cabana-style rooftops. Some units were completely burned while others suffered only rooftop palapa grass damage. Once the fire was deemed under control, authorities were able to determine damage to nine units.
Since the hotel had been seized by the state in November of 2022, it was not in operation, however, guests from a nearby hotel were evacuated as a precaution. Injuries were not reported. Civil Protection has not mentioned a possible cause for the blaze.
