Cancun, Q.R. — As of March 7, Councilor Lourdes Latife Cardona Muza will step in as mayor of Cancun while Mara Lezama runs for governor. On Thursday, Cancun City Council unanimously voted in favor of the move that will see Lezama removed from her mayor position for 90 days.
During that time, as required by law, Lezama will run for the upcoming governor of Quintana Roo seat, replacing current governor Carlos Joaquin, who has held the position since 2016.
“A new stage begins with an immense responsibility. Today, I have requested a license that will come into affect starting Monday. I am very grateful to have a great council that are the voice of the people (…)”, she explained, expressing her gratitude for the words of encouragement and support.
