Judge sentences PDC man to 33 years for two counts of attempted murder

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A Playa del Carmen man has been sentenced for two counts attempted murder in 2022. Police reported José Gilberto Figueroa García was found guilty for attempted femicide and attempted aggravated homicide to the detriment of two victims.

“The sentence was handed down for events that occurred on April 30, 2022, when the victims, a woman who had been José Gilberto’s partner, arrived at his home, accompanied by her partner at the time.

“They were traveling in a Chevrolet vehicle.

“At that moment, the victims observed another vehicle driven by the now sentenced man, along with another individual, so they tried to leave at which point José Gilberto’s companion got out of the car and shot them with a firearm,” police said.

“In order to escape, the victims crashed their vehicle into that of the aggressors, managing to leave the area and go to a hospital where they received medical attention, since they had injuries from gunshot wounds,” they added.

“According to the investigations carried out, the motive for the events stems from the previous relationship between José Gilberto Figueroa García and the female victim, with whom he fathered two children in 14 years of cohabitation.

“During that time, she suffered violence, a situation that worsened when the woman decided to separate from the aggressor.”

José Gilberto Figueroa García was sentenced to 33 years and eight months for two counts of attempted murder. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 96,220 pesos for each crime, with the matter of reparation for material damages still to be established, police said.
