Othón P. Blanco, Q. R. — A local fisherman from Othón P. Blanco was taken to hospital for bites while fishing in the Biosphere Reserve. The 59-year-old man was fishing Monday near Cayo Centro when he was bitten by a small shark.
The incident happened within the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve. Personnel from the Secretary of the Navy attended to the man and his injuries. In a statement, they reported that they carried out the medical evacuation of the man from the island.
Authorities were made aware of the attack after his fishing partner called for help. “A Defender type vessel from the Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station arrived in the area of Banco Chinchorro.
“Once there, elements located a 59-year-old man who was in stable health. He was transferred to Mahahual where he was handed over to medical personnel from a private ambulance to continue his treatment and specialized care at an area hospital.”
The man received several sharp bites to his left forearm.
