Investigative Police capture former Tulum officer wanted for kidnapping

Tulum Q.R. — A former Tulum police officer wanted in relation to kidnappings has been arrested. Early Sunday, Investigative Police captured Luis Fernando Pérez Avilés, alias “Cobra,” in the Nuevo Progreso neighborhood of Chetumal.

The former Tulum police officer was wanted by authorities due to his alleged involvement in forced disappearances. According to the FGE, at the time he committed the crimes he served as Director of the Public Security Secretariat of the Municipality of Tulum.

Following his arrest, Pérez Avilés was handed over to the authorities of the municipality of Tulum.

The Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo was offering a reward for his capture along with a second man, Eligio Ciau Canul, also a former Tulum police officer.

Both former members of the Tulum Municipal Police were removed from their positions on June 15, 2024 after being accused of collaborating with a criminal group and for their involvement in the kidnapping of several people.

Local authorities continue to focus their efforts on locating the second man, Eligio Ciau Canul, who remains at large.
