Investigation extension granted to defense team of former Tulum mayor

Tulum, Q. R. — An investigative extension has been granted to the defense lawyers of former Tulum mayor, David Balam Chan. Balam Chan is accused of having awarded irregular contracts for the provision of services to 29 companies amounting to more than 114 million peso.

During an audit conducted by the Auditoría Superior del Estado, they found a capital embezzlement in excess of 114.1 million peso.

David Balam was mayor of Tulum from 2013 to 2016 during the same time as former governor, Roberto Borge. He was arrested in October of last year and sentenced to house arrest while his investigation continues.

Oscar Conde, treasurer during the Balam administration, was also accused of the same offense and has been linked to the crime, however, he remains out of jail but outfitted with an electronic surveillance ankle bracelet.
