Tulum, Q.R. — Civil Protection has shut down a construction project in Tulum after a section collapsed Wednesday night. The incident happened on the second floor of a building under construction on Kukulkán Avenue.
The partial collapse was seen in a center section of the U-shaped building. Heavy rain has been blamed for the sudden collapse of the concrete and rebar. The now-sagging area is reported to be 18 meters long by six meters wide.
According to available information, the section was being supported by corroded scaffolding that gave way due to the rain. There were no injuries reported.
Civil Protection were at the site Thursday to verify permits, which according to reports, were not presented during the inspection mostly due to the lack of an on-site general manager. Inspectors also wrote up several construction workers for improper work gear and a lack of safety equipment.
