Four National Guard members in custody after residential reports of gunfire

Cancun, Q.R. — Four members of the National Guard were arrested early Monday in Cancun after a residential report of gunfire. At least one resident reported hearing shots near the Cielo Nuevo neighborhood of Cancun in the middle of the night.

Following the report, security personnel deployed an operation in the area and located a white Toyota pickup truck traveling northbound. According to preliminary information, upon noticing police, the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee toward the facilities of the Tenth Brigade battalion located on the same road.

Police units initiated a pursuit that ended a short distance later where the pickup truck was intercepted. Four people were arrested at the scene. They are reported to be three men and one woman.

wo firearms were seized during a search of the vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate that one of the detainees holds the rank of captain and the others are officers belonging to the National Guard.

Authorities have not officially confirmed the ranks or affiliations of those involved. Approximately ten units from the State and Municipal Police, as well as personnel from the Mexican Navy, provided support during the arrests.

Initial reports indicated that personnel from the Mexican Army later took charge of the arrests. It has not been specified whether the detainees were placed in civilian or military custody.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
