Flames consume majority of Tulum hotel

Tulum, Q.R. — A massive palapa fire at a Tulum hotel has left a majority of its structure in ruins after flames ravished the grass-topped beach club located near the Tulum archaeological site.

Flames were quick to consume two large palapas, one of which was a 15-meter long structure used as a restaurant, forcing staff to evacuate all hotel guests. Firemen were called to Hotel Poc Na Tulum, which is located in the coastal area around 1:45 p.m. Sunday to deal with the fast-moving flames.

Before flames were extinguished, the fire destroyed the kitchen, reception, restaurant and several cabins of the Poc Na Tulum Hotel. Hotel staff evacuated guests without incident. Three Municipal Police patrols were on site. The fire is believed to have started in the hotel’s cellar, however, no official word on the cause has been released.
