The burning wood and palapa grass generated a large column of smoke visible for several blocks. Area residents made the report noting the burning building was in a vacant lot.

Tulum firemen arrived to a burning thatched roof located on a vacant lot with abundant vegetation. According to the official report, the abundant dry vegetation facilitated the rapid spread of the flames.

“Thanks to the rapid mobilization of the fire department, the blaze was brought under control before it reached inhabited areas or jeopardized nearby homes,” Civil Protection reported.

Authorities confirmed there were no injuries or structural damage to nearby buildings. The area was secured to allow for cooling. Firemen remained on site to prevent the fire from reigniting.
