FGR says Cancun poacher who managed a conditional suspension will face federal charges

Cancun, Q.R. — A fisherman caught poaching banned marine life off the coast in Cancun in 2023 will face federal charges after all. Rodiber “N” was caught by federal inspectors in September of 2023 with an illegal catch of banned marine species.

He was arrested at the time by federal inspectors from the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission and charged, however, he managed to get a conditional suspension, eluding the charges against him.

On Wednesday, the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) said they were successful in the revocation of the conditional suspension and the resumption of the criminal process against him.

The FGR said Rodiber “N” was caught fishing banned marine life in 2023.

In a statement, the FGR reported “through the Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office in the state of Quintana Roo, the FGR obtained the revocation of the conditional suspension of the process against Rodiber “N” for his probable participation in the commission of a crime against the environment in the modality of capture of aquatic species declared in ban.

“The process against Rodiber “N” began on September 20, 2023, after his arrest approximately 200 meters from Puerto Juárez, municipality of Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo, when members of the Coast Guard of the Mexican Navy (Marina) saw him on board a vessel while catching snails during the closed season.

“The Navy, accompanied by personnel from the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (CONAPESCA) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), seized 31 snails of a species under a fishing ban, four starfish, two bag nets, some fins and a harpoon, objects that along with Rodiber “N” were placed at the disposal of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in the state,” they reported.

“Subsequently, the federal prosecutor offered the necessary evidence to obtain from the judge the revocation of the conditional suspension of the process and the resumption of the criminal process against the accused.

“With these actions, the FGR reaffirms its commitment to society for the investigation and prosecution of federal crimes.”
