Extortionist leader of Playa del Carmen related to Mamitas manager murder captured

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Another person believed involved in the 2022 murder of a Playa del Carmen club manager has been captured. Late Thursday, Raciel López Salazar, Acting Head of the State Attorney General’s Office, reported on the capture of Raúl “Z”.

He was arrested in coordination with the Anti-kidnapping Unit of the State of Hidalgo. Salazar reported that Raúl “Z” “is being investigated for his probable participation in the murder of the manager of the Mamitas Club in Playa del Carmen.”

Raúl “Z” was captured in Pachuca, Hidalgo. The Quintana Roo FGE had previously issued a 500,000 peso reward for information leading to his whereabouts. However, Salazar says that Raúl “Z” was located and arrested due to an ongoing investigation between authorities of Hidalgo and Quintana Roo.

“Raúl “Z”, a well-known generator of violence in the state, is the alleged leader of a network of extortionists in the municipality of Solidaridad and is related to the murder of the manager of the Mamitas Club in Playa del Carmen, which occurred in January 2022,” Salazar reported.

After his arrest in Hidalgo, he was transferred to Quintana Roo to be made available to a judge in Playa del Carmen.

In January of 2022, Mamitas Beach Club manager Federico Mazzoni was shot and killed inside the bathroom of the restaurant. His attackers were captured on surveillance cameras belonging to the club.

The first arrest in the attack took place in March of that year, which was followed by a second arrest in September. Arrest warrants for other suspects in the case were issued in January of 2023.
