Explosion on junkyard property alerts neighbors to late night fire

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Neighbors next to a lot used to store unused household items reported a fire late Tuesday. The fire broke out on a property in the Ejidal area of the city.

Playa del Carmen firemen were requested at a property on 16th Street between 130th and 135th Avenues in the Ejidal neighborhood when flames were noticed by area residents.

Neighbors reported hearing an explosion before seeing flames and smoke coming from the property.

Flames were reported shooting more than three meters into the air following the explosion.

Firemen worked to extinguish the flames and prevent spreading while Civil Protection personnel sectioned off the area.

The property is reported to have been used to store old household items including old appliances. Authorities have not provided a possible cause for the start of the fire.
