Tulum, Q.R. — An exploding transformer nearly caught an entire palapa topped building on fire Monday. The blaze was seen behind a building located in front of the Public Security Secretariat of Tulum.
Tulum firemen were quick to respond to the report Monday night, preventing a larger fire. Tulum Civil Protection, along with firemen, arrived in response to the report of the exploding transformer around 7:15 p.m.
Firemen worked for about one hour, officially declaring the fire out at 8:15 p.m. A section of approximately six square meters of building rooftop was damaged by the transformer fire.
Eber Maciel, head of the firemen, said they had to cut the power to put out the fire which “was advancing rapidly”.

Personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) arrived and immediately began work to assess the damage caused by the explosion. Power was out while they worked to make the necessary repairs.
