Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Traffic was slow-going Saturday north of Playa del Carmen where two people were killed. A collision between a taxi and passenger van left a driver and passenger dead.

The accident happened around 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lane when, according to initial reports, the driver of the taxi allegedly crossed into the van’s lane, running both vehicles off the road.
The van slammed into the passenger’s side of the taxi before mowing down a utility pole. Both vehicles came to a stop side-by-side in highway shoulder brush.
First responders found the taxi’s front seat passenger trapped inside. Playa del Carmen firemen were called in to use the jaws of life to free him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the taxi is reported to have also died.
The driver and several passengers from inside the van were injured, but none fatally. At least four people traveling in the van were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene. The exact number of passengers inside the van at the time of the accident is unknown.
Traffic was heavily congested for nearly three hours until the coroner arrived to remove the deceased while tow trucks hauled away the damaged vehicles.
