Early morning fire destroys more than two dozen Tulum buildings

Tulum, Q.R. — More than two dozen grass-topped buildings were reportedly burned to ash during an early morning fire in Tulum. Municipal firemen were called to the irregular residential colony of 2 de Octubre early Thursday morning.

Flames quickly spread from one dry building to another. Each of the buildings, made of wood and palapa grass roofs, caught fire from one to the other due to their close proximity.

People were reported sleeping inside the makeshift huts when they caught fire. At least three people were taken to hospital with serious burns. Area residents tried to put the fire out themselves, but were not able to control the fast moving flames.

Tulum firemen were successful in fully extinguishing the fire, but were not able to save the buildings. A total of 25 have been reported destroyed by the early morning blaze. A cause is not yet known.
