Driver perishes in fiery crash on Tulum highway

Tulum, Q.R. — One person died after being trapped inside their burning car. The single-vehicle accident happened Monday night when the driver of the car fell asleep and slammed into a tree.

Police and firemen were sent to the scene at 10:30 p.m. near the town of Muyil. When they arrived, they located the car in the ditch off the federal highway. It was fully engulfed in flames.

Tulum firemen were able to eventually put out the fire, however, the driver perished inside. The collision caused two other motorists to collide with one another, however, they both received only minor injuries.

According to preliminary information, the driver dozed off while traveling the Felipe Carrillo Puerto-Tulum section of highway.
