Driver abandons hung up cargo truck responsible in fatal PDC accident

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A two vehicle accident at the Punta Maroma curve north of Playa del Carmen has left one dead. The accident happened Saturday when one vehicle ran a marked stop sign.

According to initial reports, the accident happened when the driver of a cargo truck ran a stop sign to pull a U-turn. The driver is accused of running the stop sign in order to make the U-turn when he cut off the oncoming motorcycle.

The truck was found abandoned after becoming hung up on the roadway shoulder. May 23, 2026.

Both vehicles collided on a corner near Punta Maroma. The driver of the cargo truck was heading toward Playa del Carmen at the time of the accident. The driver of the motorcycle hit the side of the cargo truck.

He was thrown from his bike onto the pavement where paramedics found him dead. The cargo truck ended up on the shoulder where it was found hung-up on a section of concrete lip.

The driver responsible had already fled the scene by the time police arrived.

National Guard assisted police in directing highway traffic while the scene of the fatal accident was cleared. The deceased has not been publicly named.
