Dozing taxi driver heading to Playa del Carmen ends up on roof leaving Tulum

Tulum, Q.R. — A Tulum taxi driver walked away from his crushed cab after rolling it Wednesday afternoon. The taxi was found laying on its roof after the driver hit a highway median and flipped.

The overturned unit is part of a fleet operating out of the Tulum International Airport. According to available information, the driver was heading for Playa del Carmen and was approximately three kilometers from the municipality’s exit when he overturned.

Initial reports say the driver lost control and jumped the center median ending up on his roof in the opposite lane. Witnesses reported that the driver, who was traveling alone, got out of the vehicle without any major complications.

He was treated by Civil Protection paramedics at the scene for a cut hand. The overturned vehicle disrupted traffic with one completely blocked lane.

National Guard Highways were informed of the accident since it happened on a federal highway. They coordinated flagging and a tow truck to remove the damaged taxi.

According to the driver, he dozed for a second due to fatigue while heading to Playa del Carmen and hit the central median.
