Deadly start to the holidays: Tulum bicyclist killed on federal highway

Tulum, Q.R. — National Guard were first on scene Tuesday morning in response to a fatal highway accident. A cyclist was pronounced dead after being struck by a small truck.

The accident happened around 8:00 a.m. along the federal 307 near a hotel. Police have not said if the male bicyclist was a worker of the nearby hotel.

At the scene, police arrived to find the man’s bicycle lodged under the front driver’s side of the company truck. Responding paramedics pronounced the bicyclist dead at the scene of the Christmas Eve day accident.

The young driver of the company truck was arrested. It is not known exactly how the driver of the truck hit the bicyclist.

Municipal police cordoned off the area while the scene was photographed and the truck and bicycle removed from the highway. The deceased has not been identified.
