Cancun police track down hit and run driver in death of cyclist

Cancun, Q.R. — A woman was arrested early Tuesday in the Cancun Hotel Zone in relation to the death of a cyclist. Police were able to track down the female driver after, according to witnesses, she fled the scene after hitting a man on a bike.

The tragic early morning accident happened shortly after 6:00 a.m. along Kukulcán Boulevard. According to early information, the man was riding from the center of the city into the Cancun Hotel Zone at the time of the accident.

He was hit by a green crossover SUV at approximately kilometer 4.5 of the hotel zone. Witnesses watched as the female driver of the SUV kept driving. Using city cameras, police caught up with her at kilometer 8, where she was located in traffic. She was arrested.

At the time of her arrest, the front passenger side of her car was found heavily damaged with a punched in front hood and busted windshield.

The man she hit was pronounced dead at the scene after being thrown from his bike and into a light pole. He has not been publicly identified pending family notification. Police have not commented on charges.
