Cancun, Q.R. — An accident between a motorcycle and a taxi left one person seriously injured and another dead Sunday. A woman riding as a passenger on the motorcycle that slammed into the back of a city taxi was killed. The driver was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the two vehicle collision shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Bonampak Avenue and 20th Street. There, they found a crumpled motorcycle laying upside down on its handlebars with the driver and passenger on the pavement.

The female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was serious. Witnesses said the female passenger was not wearing a helmet and that the male driver’s helmet flew off when he hit the back of the taxi.
According to available information, the accident happened when the driver of the motorcycle failed to notice the taxi driver had slowed down for a tope speed bump. Due to the speed in which he was traveling, the bike hit the back driver’s side of the taxi, rolling the motorcycle and sending both riders to the pavement.

The driver of the taxi was not injured. His cab suffered minor damage to its rear light and bumper. Cancun Transit officers and emergency services cordoned off the area Sunday morning while the accident scene was cleared.
