Canadian man arrested in shooting death of Tulum police officer

Tulum, Q.R. — A Canadian man has been arrested for the shooting death of a Tulum police officer. On Monday, police from the municipality were pursing a man through a jungle area near the town of Francisco Uh May when an officer was shot.

He was hit in the face and rushed to a private hospital where he later died.

Police from Tulum were chasing the man through jungle a short distance off the highway when the shooting took place. Officers were responding to the report of an attempted break and enter of private property made Monday around 1:00 p.m.

In a brief statement, the SSP of Quintana Roo reported “during a preventive operation near the town of Francisco Uh May, an element of the SSPYPC lost his life in the line of duty. The alleged perpetrator is already in custody. All our solidarity with the family, we will give punctual follow-up to the facts.”

Police have arrested Canadian Patrick “N” for the murder of 41-year-old Cristóbal Velázquez “G”. Patrick “N” is reported to be a local resident. At the time of reporting, local authorities had not yet made a public statement.
