Bicyclist follows foul smell to bagged human remains outside Tulum

Tulum, Q.R. — Police were at the scene at Aldea Zamá in the town of Tulum Sunday after human remains were found. Authorities cordoned off the area and transferred the remains to forensic medical services.

The discovery of black bags containing human remains abandoned off the highway was reported Sunday morning. A worker on a bicycle followed what he called a strong, foul odor to the black bags.

The bags were located near the intersection of Itzamná Avenue and Juan Ek Street in a highly trafficked area.

According to initial reports, the bicyclist was on his way to work when the bad smell caught his attention. He was lead to two black bags on the side of the road. When he got off his bike to look, he realized they were human remains.

Police arrived to confirm the report and cordon off the area while they investigated.

According to preliminary information, the body was partially dismembered. Authorities have not said if the body was male or female, nor did they provide a possible age of the victim.
