Authorities track down criminal mastermind behind multiple Tulum homicides

Tulum, Q.R. — Three men have been arrested by police who say one of them is a state’s Most Wanted. During their arrests, authorities seized drugs, loaded weapons and ammo. One of the men in custody is said to be the mastermind behind several homicides in Tulum.

In custody are Fernando “N”, alias “El Gavilán” and/or “Mafi” and Carlos Manuel “N”, alias “El Barni”, who were captured together traveling a dirt road in the town of Nuevo Xcan. Both men are reported to be part of a criminal group.

The third captured is José Benjamín “N”, alias “El Cuervo”, a Quintana Roo Most Wanted. Authorities say he “is considered a priority target by the State Crime Atlas for being the leader of a criminal group generating violence dedicated to drug dealing, extortion and being the mastermind behind multiple homicides committed in Tulum.”

All three were arrested by elements of the Interinstitutional Police Group made up of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSC), Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR), the Mexican Army, Navy, National Guard, State Attorney General’s Office(FGE) and State Police.

According to their statement, “these individuals were seized with six AK-47 semi-automatic weapons known as “goat’s horn”, an AR15 long gun with a loaded magazine, 33 unloaded AK-47 magazines and 13 loaded ones, a 9 mm caliber weapon with a loaded magazine, a 5.7 mm caliber short gun with a loaded magazine, a mortar grenade, eight tactical vests, four kilos of green, dry grass similar to marijuana in bags, two helmets and two vehicles.”

Following the legal proceedings, the three detainees, along with the evidence seized, were handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
