Authorities investigating murder of sugarcane president after locating three bodies during search

Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — State authorities say they have begun an investigation into the discovery of three bodies. The bodies were discovered Monday during a routine foot search near the town of Sacxán.

According to police, one of the deceased is Evaristo Gómez Díaz, the President of the Local Union of Sugarcane Producers. His body was found Monday next to two other men. Police have not identified the other two deceased men.

Gómez Díaz, who headed the Unión Local de Productores de Caña de Azúcar, was the victim of an assassination attempt last year. On October 6, 2024, Gómez Díaz was the victim of attempted murder while leaving a building in the community of Carlos A. Madrazo. He was shot in the right arm and received treatment at a private clinic in Chetumal.

In February 2022, an armed group kidnapped him while he was traveling along the Juan Sarabia Highway. During that incident, witnesses notified police and hours later, he was released. In both cases, authorities conducted investigations but were unable to identify or arrest those responsible.

On Monday evening, the FGE reported on the discovery of the three bodies found in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.

“The FGE Quintana Roo reports the opening of an investigation into the aggravated homicide of three people, which occurred in the town of Sacxán, in the municipality of OPB.

Evaristo Gómez Díaz, seen here in a recent interview, was among the three men found dead Monday.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that among the deceased is E.G.D., a well-known sugarcane leader in the south of the state. This Social Representative is working in coordination with authorities from all three levels of government to clarify the events and bring the person(s) responsible to justice.”
