Authorities confirm gas leak, not explosive device, during evacuation of Playa del Carmen school

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The recent evacuation of a Playa del Carmen elementary school was related to a nearby gas leak. The leak was reported to authorities who determined it was coming from a neighborhood house.

The incident prompted the evacuation of an elementary school in Villas del Sol Wednesday morning.

One female student was taken to hospital Wednesday September 28, 2026.

According to some local media, the evacuation was the result of an explosive device reported inside the school, however, authorities were quick to correct those reports, confirming an LP gas leak at a private home was the reason behind the evacuation.

A total of 476 people were evacuated from the school and 10 treated for symptoms of poisoning in relation to the Wednesday leak. One of the 10 students treated for LP gas poisoning was taken to hospital.

The emergency happened along Cigüeñas Avenue and Ibis Blanco Street where security personnel reported the strong smell of LP gas to local authorities.

In their call, they reported the smell of gas coming from a house that was located near a school.

Parents were called to pick up their kids during the Wednesday morning evacuation September 28, 2026.

Emergency services arrived and began the immediate evacuation of all 476 people inside the school while firemen sought out the source of the leak. It was found coming from a private home adjacent to the school.

The gas leak was controlled without incident.
