Tulum, Q.R. — Emergency 911 sent a response team to a residential area of Tulum Saturday morning after receiving the report of multiple palapa fires.
The fires broke out in an irregular area of the municipality called Zamá village at 10:28 a.m. Authorities arrived to find at least five palapas had already been devoured by flames. At least six people were on site trying to extinguish flames, but to no avail.
Ministerial police remained on site to investigate the start of the fires. No injuries were reported.
Earlier this month, a palapa fire in the town’s hotel zone wiped out its Jungle Market with authorities saying at least 20 businesses were destroyed by the flames. An official cause of the fire has yet to be released.
