Stray bullet leaves one dead in Tulum beach club shooting

Tulum, Q.R. — One of two people hit by bullets in what is believed to be an exchange of gunfire between gang members in a Tulum Hotel Zone shooting has died. An American woman identified as Niko “H” died over the weekend after being hit by a stray bullet.

The woman was with a friend Friday night when gang members exchanged gunfire at a Tulum beach club. Police were at kilometer 7.5 of the Tulum-Boca Paila highway around 6:40 p.m. in response to reports of gunfire.

When paramedics arrived at the scene they confirmed one deceased female. The second person, who has not been identified, was injured and taken to hospital.

According to information gathered, two armed men arrived at the beach club and exchanged gunfire, hitting two restaurant / beach club customers. The deceased is an American national. It is not known if she was a visitor or resident.

Police cordoned off the area while they collected evidence and the body was removed. A public statement surrounding the events has not been released.
