Tulum, Q.R. — The highway collision between a private car and passenger bus Sunday has left one person dead. The accident was reported to local authorities by passing motorists on a section of highway southwest of the town of Tulum.
According to available information, both vehicles were traveling in the same direction when the driver of the car attempted to pass the bus to turn off the highway.
The male driver of the car, American Jimmy “W” from New York, was killed. A front seat female passenger, his wife Cheung “M”, was injured along with two young children in the back seat. All three suffered minor injuries and were treated at a Tulum hospital.
The bus was carrying 10 passengers to the neighboring state of Chiapas at the time of the accident. There were no reported injuries of any of the bus passengers. The accident happened shortly before 2:00 p.m. and caused significant traffic delays due to the magnitude of the accident and arrival of emergency vehicles.
Tulum firemen were requested at the scene to remove the body of the trapped driver of the car. The driver of the bus fled the scene. The American family involved in the accident were reportedly tourists to the area.
