Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — A raging fire consumed a palapa-roofed eatery in the small community of Subteniente López. The fire happened Wednesday afternoon on Mexico Avenue and Reforma Street.
Firemen from the nearby city of Chetumal attended to reports of the palapa fire that quickly spread. Dense smoke filled the air as the damp rooftop grass burned along with its wood frame.
Initially, nearby residents and staff from the roast chicken restaurant tried to put the fire out themselves, however, wind gusts worked against their efforts. The fire quickly grew and spread to the rest of the restaurant, completely engulfing it.

By the time Chetumal firemen arrived, the restaurant was already beyond saving. The building directly next to it was made of concrete and suffered only scorch marks. The opposite side was a vacant lot.
Firemen have not reported on a cause for the fire, however, damage was estimated at more than a million pesos.
